The brief

The kitchen occupies a compact footprint within a period property and was designed to accommodate a fully functional layout, including a surface-mounted sink, dishwasher, oven, surface-mounted hob, built-in microwave, and sufficient storage to maintain clean, uncluttered work surfaces.

The worktops were fabricated to achieve a 40 mm finished thickness, using a 12 mm Panda porcelain slab, 10 mm honeycomb core, and 12 mm MDF backing to provide the required structural support while maintaining a slim porcelain surface.

The material palette makes a bold statement. A dramatic Panda porcelain, characterised by its distinctive black veining, was specified for both the worktops and full-height splashbacks, creating a striking visual feature throughout the space. A book-matched layout was requested to ensure continuity of the veining across adjoining surfaces, while the bold monochrome pattern provides a strong contrast against the painted cabinetry.

The problem: book-matching in a compact space

Panda porcelain is characterised by its bold, high-contrast veining, making slab planning a critical part of the project. The client's requirement for a book-matched layout meant that the veining needed to align naturally across the worktops, splashbacks, and corner junctions while maintaining visual continuity throughout the kitchen.

As the kitchen occupies a compact space, every joint and transition is highly visible. Careful slab nesting and fabrication planning were therefore essential to determine the orientation of each piece, minimise visible joins, and ensure the dramatic veining flowed consistently across adjoining surfaces. Achieving this balance between the natural movement of the stone and the practical limitations of fabrication was one of the key technical challenges of the project.

Planning the layout

The plan runs the working kitchen along two walls and turns the third into a peninsula. That peninsula does three jobs at once: it adds the largest single run of worktop in the room, it closes the kitchen off from the adjoining space without building a wall, and it gives somewhere to sit.

Appliances are split so the two working zones stay clear of one another, with sink and dishwasher on one run and hob and oven on the other, so two people can use the kitchen without crossing paths. The microwave is built into the upper cabinetry to keep it off the worktop, and a corner unit takes the awkward return that would otherwise have been dead space.

In a room this size each of those decisions carries more weight than it would in a large kitchen. There is no slack to absorb a bad one.

Detailing the junctions

The porcelain is used as cladding rather than as a worktop with a separate splashback behind it: the same material, carried to full height and returned around the corners and the end of the run.

That puts the difficulty into the detailing. Returns have to be mitred so no edge reads as thin, and socket cut-outs have to sit where they will not interrupt the strongest part of the pattern. Those decisions are taken in drawing, since none of them can be adjusted once the slabs are cut.

Light

Lighting is built into the joinery rather than applied to the ceiling. Warm LED runs through the cornice and washes the ceiling, under-cabinet strips light the worktop directly, and a recessed panel covers the centre of the room.

The reason is the surface. Bright downlights on polished porcelain create hot spots and glare; light bounced off the ceiling and delivered under the cabinets lights the worktop evenly and lets the veining read properly. It is a small technical decision that changes how the most expensive surface in the room looks.

Running the job

The design was drawn and specified before fabrication began: cabinetry setting-out, stone layout, appliance positions, socket locations and lighting circuits resolved on paper, then coordinated with the fabricator and the trades on site.

The annotated drawing shown here is part of that: the document that carries material, lighting and appliance decisions to the people building it. Getting those decisions made and communicated early is what stops a small, tightly planned room unravelling on site, where there is no room to improvise.

The result

A small kitchen that does not behave like one. The continuous porcelain stretches the room rather than crowding it, and the book-matched veining reads as one deliberate composition rather than a set of separate panels.

Everything the room needs is in it, and the surfaces are still clear.
